Upcoming M-NCPPC, Arts and History Events in Prince George’s County 

Riverdale, MD – There’s no competition for the arts and history programming offered by the Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County! Choose from a host of events beginning now through April and you can decide for yourself who takes the title.

WHAT: Family Fun Concert: The Sorcerer's Apprentice

WHEN: Sunday, February 24, 2019, 2 PM – 3:30 PM

WHERE: Riversdale House Museum, 4811 Riverdale Road Riverdale Park, MD 20737

COST: FREE; Capacity limited; registration required.

Riversdale House Museum will host the U.S. Army Field Band Woodwind Quintet as they perform The Sorcerer’s Apprentice by Paul Dukas. Enjoy this timeless classic, made famous in the twentieth century by Disney’s Fantasia (1940), starring Mickey Mouse. Kids will get to meet the musicians and see the instruments up close in Riversdale’s intimate West Wing event space, once a music room during the early twentieth century. Guests will be welcome to join the band for refreshments after the performance.

WHAT: Seventh Annual Artists on the Rise Exhibition Reception

Montpelier Arts Center strives to foster a positive, creative environment in which young and emerging artists realize their full potential as creative individuals. In honor of National Youth Art Month, Montpelier spotlights the talents of teen visual artists (ages 13-18) from the Washington metropolitan area.

WHAT: Laurel Art Guild Exhibition Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony

WHEN: Sunday, March 10, 2019, from 2 PM – 4 PM

COST: FREE

Organized by the Laurel Art Guild, this annual exhibit is juried by a regional professional and showcases works by artists ages 18 and older who live in the Washington metropolitan area and surrounding states. The exhibit includes paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, collages, and more. This year will be the 50th anniversary exhibit. Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third places and three merit awards. Get involved in your local arts activities and enjoy the support and camaraderie of your fellow artists. WHAT: Smooth Sounds for Seniors: Stefan Scaggiari

WHEN: Thursday, March 14, 2019 from 12 PM – 1:30 PM

AUDIENCE: Seniors, 60 or older

COST: $12, Pre-registration required.

Versatile pianist Stefan Scaggiari is no stranger to Montpelier audiences. Scaggiari offers a comfortable mix of classic American songs and contemporary originals. He has performed as both a jazz and classical pianist at the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Concord Pavilion, and Baltimore’s Artscape. Scaggiari has collaborated as a soloist with the Kansas City Symphony, the Evansville Philharmonic, the Florida Orchestra, and the Calgary Philharmonic and with his trio in crossover classical/jazz concerts at the Shriver Hall Concert Series.

Voted one of the top 10 bassists of 2016 by the prestigious Downbeat Magazine Reader’s Poll, Mark Wade has been an active bassist in the New York City area for over 20 years. In February 2015, Wade released his debut album, Event Horizon, to international acclaim.

WHAT: Classical Recital Series: Axios Trio

Anastasia Christofakis (clarinet), Elizabeth Hill (piano), and Justin Page (cello) unite as a trio to provide an entertaining musical sensation. Christofakis is a Greek-American clarinetist who enjoys an active career as a soloist, chamber musician, and educator. Elizabeth G. Hill, DMA, is an accomplished soloist, chamber musician, orchestral pianist, and educator. Cellist Justin Page performs around the country with orchestras such as the Orlando Philharmonic, the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, and the North Carolina Symphony. Free; $5/person appreciated. 

WHAT: Live at Montpelier: Kristin Callahan Quintet

The Kristin Callahan Quintet will take you on a journey back in time to the era of the formidable Peggy Lee. A Maryland native, Callahan started her career in Baltimore and is now performing throughout the East Coast, attracting many of the finest touring and recording artists. With two albums already under her belt, Callahan is working on her third album, A Burning Kiss, which continues the theme of exploring love in all its facets. Tickets: $25/person; 10% discount for Montpelier members and seniors.

WHAT: Liberty Girls: An American Girl Book Club

AUDIENCE: Girls Ages 7-13

The Liberty Girls book club is back in 2019 with American Girls Marie-Grace and Cecile! Read about the exciting adventures of these two 19th Century girls from New Orleans, Louisiana. At each meeting, members will participate in a book discussion with a Prince George’s County librarian, do a period activity or craft, and enjoy light refreshments. $30 membership fee covers the book discussions, activities, refreshments for all four meeting dates, as well as, a NEW 2019 Liberty Girls t-shirt and book bag. Liberty Girls meets four times! March 23 & 30, April 6 & 13

WHAT: Mid-Century Modern Soiree

WHEN: Thursday, March 28, 2019 from 7 PM –9:30 PM

Immerse in the mid-20th century, exploring arts, architecture, food, music, and all that was hip at Riversdale House Museum. Take a look back at Prince George’s County’s architectural icons of the 1950s and 1960s with an illustrated lecture by Thomas Gross of the Prince George’s County Planning Department. Retro drinks and party punch will be provided and guests are invited to make their own mid-century mementos at the craft station. Mid-century attire admired but not required. Fee: $20 per person; advance payment required by March 21. Ages 21 & up.

Created by pianist Amy K. Bormet in 2011, the Washington Women in Jazz hosts an annual festival each March to celebrate the women of the DC jazz community. Bormet and her colleagues develop, promote, and lead a wide array of concerts, jam sessions, lectures, panels, discussions, and masterclasses throughout the festival. During the Montpelier concert, you will see the passion, devotion, and talent these Women in Jazz possess. Tickets: $25/person; 10% discount for Montpelier members and seniors.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, this year’s panel discussion continues our tradition of acknowledging the achievements of performing and recording artists and encouraging a new generation of musicians and vocalists. Whether you are considering a music career or are well along the path, there is much to learn about succeeding in the music business. Meet three dynamic women who will help you stand out in a crowded field and move up the career ladder. This year's speakers include radio host, world jazz vocalist, and mentor Lynn Veronneau with jazz vocalist and vocal coach Alison Crockett. WPFW Radio’s Katea Stitt returns to share new insights. Topics include education and training, branding, and booking.

Avon Dews is a Washington, D.C., native who started playing the harmonica at a young age. His style is classic, cool, and jazzy with a little old school and a touch of funk and blues. A professional harmonica player, Dews has played at venues including the Kennedy Center, the American Market at the National Harbor, the 2015 Cherry Blossom Festival, and the Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club.

WHAT: Tavern Night

WHEN: Saturday, April 27, 2019 from 8 PM –10 PM

COST: Resident Cost: $28, Non-resident Cost: $35; reservation is required by 4/19

Riversdale House Museum invites you to make merry with the spirited sounds of the Ship’s Company Chanteymen as Riversdale’s basement is transformed into a 19th century tavern. Gather with old friends and meet new ones as you enjoy period appropriate beverages and a tavern-style menu in a lively atmosphere. Ages 21 & up. Advance payment is required by April 19. Resident of Prince George’s & Montgomery Counties: $28; Non-Resident: $35. Fee includes a souvenir glass.
