WHAT: Family Fun Concert: The Sorcerer's Apprentice

Riversdale House Museum will host the U.S. Army Field Band Woodwind Quintet as they perform The Sorcerer’s Apprentice by Paul Dukas. Enjoy this timeless classic, made famous in the twentieth century by Disney’s Fantasia (1940), starring Mickey Mouse. Kids will get to meet the musicians and see the instruments up close in Riversdale’s intimate West Wing event space, once a music room during the early twentieth century. Guests will be welcome to join the band for refreshments after the performance.

Versatile pianist Stefan Scaggiari is no stranger to Montpelier audiences. Scaggiari offers a comfortable mix of classic American songs and contemporary originals. He has performed as both a jazz and classical pianist at the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Concord Pavilion, and Baltimore’s Artscape. Scaggiari has collaborated as a soloist with the Kansas City Symphony, the Evansville Philharmonic, the Florida Orchestra, and the Calgary Philharmonic and with his trio in crossover classical/jazz concerts at the Shriver Hall Concert Series.

Christofakis is a Greek-American clarinetist who enjoys an active career as a soloist, chamber musician, and educator. Elizabeth G. Hill, DMA, is an accomplished soloist, chamber musician, orchestral pianist, and educator. Cellist Justin Page performs around the country with orchestras such as the Orlando Philharmonic, the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, and the North Carolina Symphony. The Kristin Callahan Quintet will take you on a journey back in time to the era of the formidable Peggy Lee. A Maryland native, Callahan started her career in Baltimore and is now performing throughout the East Coast, attracting many of the finest touring and recording artists. With two albums already under her belt, Callahan is working on her third album, A Burning Kiss, which continues the theme of exploring love in all its facets. The Liberty Girls book club is back in 2019 with American Girls Marie-Grace and Cecile! Read about the exciting adventures of these two 19th Century girls from New Orleans, Louisiana. At each meeting, members will participate in a book discussion with a Prince George’s County librarian, do a period activity or craft, and enjoy light refreshments. $30 membership fee covers the book discussions, activities, refreshments for all four meeting dates, as well as, a NEW 2019 Liberty Girls t-shirt and book bag. Take a look back at Prince George’s County’s architectural icons of the 1950s and 1960s with an illustrated lecture by Thomas Gross of the Prince George’s County Planning Department. Retro drinks and party punch will be provided and guests are invited to make their own mid-century mementos at the craft station. Mid-century attire admired but not required. Avon Dews is a Washington, D.C., native who started playing the harmonica at a young age. His style is classic, cool, and jazzy with a little old school and a touch of funk and blues. A professional harmonica player, Dews has played at venues including the Kennedy Center, the American Market at the National Harbor, the 2015 Cherry Blossom Festival, and the Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club.
