A Guide to Holiday Arts with the M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation

 

Riverdale, MD – Awaken your creativity this holiday season with arts programming from the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Department of Parks and Recreation, available throughout Prince George’s County:

WHAT: “Playin’ to the Edge” by Aqcuaetta Williams
WHEN: Monday, November 19, 2018 - Friday, January 11, 2019, Weekdays 8:30 AM - 5 PM

COST: FREE


Aqcuaetta Williams bases her success on reaching her audience of free thinkers: artists and poets. By doing so, she opens a doorway to images that create emotional agitation and excitement. Her collage paintings are engaging in their technique and expression. Williams presents the viewer with keys to unlock the unconscious mind.

 

WHAT: The Monument Quilt Project Workshop

WHEN: Wednesday, November 28, 2018, from 6:30 PM – 9:30 PM

WHERE: Montpelier Arts Center, 9652 Muirkirk Rd, Laurel, MD 20708

AUDIENCE: Artists, Adults, Individuals interested in standing up to abuse

COST: FREE; Reservation required.


The Monument Quilt, a project organized by FORCE: Upsetting Rape Culture, is an ongoing collection of stories from survivors of rape and abuse. Join FORCE for a workshop where survivors and supporters will share their stories and workshop participants will create messages of support on 4' x 4' red quilt squares. Completed quilt squares will join thousands more in city and town centers to create a public space of healing and conversation. The monument quilt will be displayed on the National Mall, May 31 - June 2, 2019. All materials are provided. Please call 301-377-7800 to reserve a space in this free workshop. Spaces are limited.


WHAT: Annual Holiday Group Show Opening Reception

WHEN: Sunday, December 2, 2018, from 2 PM – 4 PM

WHERE: Montpelier Arts Center, 9652 Muirkirk Rd, Laurel, MD 20708

Join the resident artists of Montpelier Arts Center as they showcase their work together. Enjoy collage, rug hooking, painting, jewelry, sculpture, and more. Join us December 2nd for the reception and our Annual Holiday Open House. Then visit the artists in their studios to see where and how they create! Full exhibit runs December 1-31, 2018. Galleries are open daily from 10 AM - 5 PM.


WHAT: Baden’s Breakfast with Santa and the Grinch in Whoville

WHAT: Brentwood Arts' Annual Craft Fair and Beer Tasting Lounge

Even today, the name “Motown” still evokes the sounds and images of that past musical era full of great artists, classic songs, and smooth choreography. For the holidays, "Motown and More: A Holiday Celebration," offers those special tunes that bring the season in with style—such as The Temptations’ “Silent Night” and the Jackson 5’s “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” This event is a seasonal favorite throughout the state and has sold out area venues for the past three years.


WHAT: Handel and Hamilton for the Holidays

WHEN: Sunday, December 16, 2018, from 3 PM – 5 PM

Holiday music combined with historical narrative that reflects the time period between 1700 and 1800 is performed at this recital featuring two Washington National Opera soloists. The concert features holiday music by G. F. Handel and includes touches of Broadway.
