Bicycle Unit

Park Police has approximately 40 officers certified in bicycle patrol. Bike patrol offers an effective way for officers to patrol in areas and settings that are not practical for patrol in a motor vehicle. Our officers can often be seen on bike patrols on hiker/biker trails and at special events that draw large crowds, including the Hispanic Festival and the Prince George's County Fair.

Training

Officers certified for bike patrol must successfully complete a four-day course of instruction in operations and procedures associated with utilizing a bicycle during patrol. The training, both physically and mentally demanding, requires officers to complete a 40-mile bike ride in a day. Park patrons have noted that they are happy to see Park Police officers patrolling trails by bicycle.
