Daughters of the Dust Directed by Julie Dash, United States, 1991 (112 mins.) The first film to be directed by an African-American woman and see wide distribution, this is Dash's only major motion picture to date. The story focuses on the Peazant family, whose ancestors were brought to Gullah island centuries before to live secluded away from slavery, the film's themes also broach post-colonialism, communal history, and change in a sweeping yet intimate epic woven before the viewer by a mostly female cast.
