Echoes of the Enslaved - Public Archaeology in the Slave Quarters (REGISTRATION CLOSED)
Saturday, September 7, 2019
Reservations are no longer being accepted for this event. There is no waitlist, but please call us with questions. The Echoes of the Enslaved event series is part of a unique two-day commemoration held with the generous cooperation of The Slave Dwelling Project (www.slavedwellingproject.org). Three public events will address the lasting legacies of chattel slavery in Prince George's County and discuss archaeological discoveries that have provided insight into the daily lives of individuals who left little or no written record.
Get fresh air and exercise while discovering history's secrets! Join archaeologists to excavate the area where enslaved men, women, and children lived in the decades before emancipation. We have discovered nails and bricks from long-forgotten quarters, animal bones, oyster shells, and dish fragments from meals, along with personal items like buttons, keys, and tobacco pipes. What will YOU find???
Join us for a bonfire conversation the evening of Friday, September 6 at Mount Calvert Historical and Archaeological Park, and a Legacy of Enslavement Panel Discussion at Marietta House Museum on Saturday, September 7 at 6:30 PM.
Ages: All ages are welcome
